OGC’s competitive season opened November 10 and 11, as Gymnastics Mississauga hosted the Women’s Tour Selection competition.  This annual competition is open to gymnasts 13 years old and up, who compete in level 7 through Senior National.  The top 8 gymnasts in each level are selected to form Team Ontario for an Invitational competition in the USA in early 2007.  Oakville was represented by 7 gymnasts at this competition.

Provincial Level 9

Level 9 is the highest provincial competition level, outside of the National stream.  There were 24 girls in the category, competing for the Ontario team traveling to Texas in February.  OGC was represented by 3 athletes, all competing in their first competition after moving up to level 9 this season.

Nikki Paterson led OGC with a bronze medal on vault and a 4th place finish on uneven bars.  She finished in a tie for 8th place overall, and will be an alternate for the touring team.  After missing most of last season to an injury, Katie Sampson earned a 5th place finish on vault, and placed 13th overall.  Tedra Bolger was one spot behind in 14th place overall, and earned a 6th place finish on the balance beam.

Provincial Level 7

The level 7 category was extremely competitive, with 46 athletes from across the province vying for only 8 positions on the Ontario team traveling to Texas.  OGC’s team was reduced from 5 to 4 gymnasts, with Jaclyn Charlton missing the event due to an injured ankle.

Lianne Girard led the Oakville gymnasts with a silver medal on uneven bars, and a 17th place finish overall.  Staci Carvalho earned a bronze medal on uneven bars, an 8th place finish on floor exercise, and finished 18th overall.  Sarah Jansen and Erinn Mistak rounded out the Oakville team, placing 29th and 31st overall.

Although none of the girls qualified for Team Ontario, they all had solid performances in one of the most difficult competitions of the season.
